"static caravan really need no
introduction to these pages, aside fat cat records they have been probably
the most consistent label around at the moment providing a spring board
for some of the finest bands to be found briefly taking up residence
in the racks of local record emporiums - tunng, shady bard, fortdax,
my electric love affair and d_rradio have all at some point in the recent
memory made their tentative first steps for birmingham’s finest.
showcased here are the pre-season quartet featuring both names you should
know and names you will come to know shortly. the ridiculously prolific
cheju (wil bolton) is first out of the blocks with 'traces'. taken from
his recent ultra limited 'a rainy mile' set this little electronic nugget
with its spatial awareness and crafted collage of whirrs and clicks
is a slice of poised enigmatic electro pop - or in other words lilting
lullaby tuneage for kitchen appliances. next up darren hayman - former
front man of hefner (themselves currently the subject of two superb
retrospectives) can be found these days splitting duties between track
and field and static caravan, the latter having the benefit of his limited
series of holiday seven inches. '8 bit world' is taken from the second
in the series, the 'ukulele' one, a paean to a pre digital / pre internet
world laced throughout with an inspired simplicity and turn of hook
providing proof indeed he’s lost none of his song writing humour
or edge. ylid is bristol based musician rob lyons who to date has had
several releases find their home on some of the most crucial outlets
about including cactus island, sutemos and awkward silence. 'i stole
you' has an unerring curious passion to it that reminded me initially
of a cross between tex la homa and early minotaur shock, liberally textured
and sparsely arranged for all its erstwhile chill like aspect its proves
to be a rather warming treat. with their debut release on the horizon
and sure to sell out in record time and become the next must have acquisition
via ebay garden sees the return of simian’s simon lord, 'between
the devil and the deep blue sea' sounds like love on seriously bad acid,
think of a less flowery and more psychedelicised circulus and then some
more." - losing
