"'patchwork' is the title of an
ambitious 2 disc release remix project signed boltfish. the first disc
features a veritable remix fest where boltfish’s usual suspects
are remixes and are remixed: j.auer, karmøy (recurring difficulties
finding the small o, slash character), boc scadet, mint, zainetica,
bal-a-klah-va, polestar and cheju all deliver fine electronic music
soothing to ears and soul. the second disc contains remixes made by
winners of a competition held by boltfish earlier this year (2005).
the competition was to fabricate a remix of 'camellia' a track (vocals
courtesy of soo lee) originally made by cheju and included on boltfish
compilation 'region zero' (bolt007). the final 13 to get their remix
on disc were the rumblist, kado, z-arc, richard houghten, sunburn in
cyprus, damien shingleton, tito huapaya, mattew mccullough, manilla,
ray benge, tarafonika, sidechain and cheju. that’s 24 remixes
stretching over 2 hours and boltfish’s 23rd release." - electronic

"new various artists cd on boltfish containing 2 discs of pure remix. disc one is a remix frenzy with all the artists remixing each others tracks and disc two is 'the camellia remixes' which contains more remixes by various artists of cheju's 'camellia'. disc one: 'j.Auer - roppongi hills (mint's tourist mix)' lays down a crystal clear path with sharp reverberating remnants of shattered spaceships that line the interior of this electrified 4am delve into the bowels of a neon night. 'karmoy - faded pictures (zainetica & utility player - upz mix)' then eeks out a fuzzy waveform of broken illusions with blinking creativity and a side pocket of snap happy drumbeats and engaging melodies, that you cannot resist, whilst 'boc scadet - chani (cheju remix)' unleashes all the new creations from a makeshift petri dish hideaway in the rubbish bins of a secret workshop that has never been breached by a human form...fuzz zap and pulse it to the middle of next week...its all good. smooth drumbeats and springy sub basslines washed down with a cup of fresh air followed by a handful of aa batteries is what 'karmøy - akra (j.auer - early frosty morning mix)' is all about. the adventure into a nest formed entirely of cornflakes and slices of frozen polystyrene is captured in audio format via a tiny mic on 'mint - standing still (polestar - reminisce mix)' and 'zainetica - when the time comes (cheju remix)' takes the form of a one way rocket ride into deep deep space, sideswiping newly formed galaxies and leaving a trail of heavy bassline in your wake. all topped off with an intriguing melody, its tempting to scoff it all down in one go. 'bal-a-klah-va - the luminous flesh of giants (october man remix)' is another adventure wrapped in the guise of a track on a cd. smaller than small microscopic sounds flutter through the air like feather dropping off a synthetic parrot, causing streaks of colour to infiltrate the monochrome surroundings, and soothe everything as far as the eye can see. we are then transported to an almost detroit rumbling, with intent, welcome to 'mint - a question of timing (j.auer - pacific Blue remix)'. plodding synth compressions, bounce and scuttle around as if they were caught in an eternal contest of hidden mind games deep within your swollen brain. a good one for a 3am refresh. 'bal-a-klah-va - anamorph (recursive mix)' lays it down with a jewel rich cave bursting into life when a runaway lazer and his friends stumble across the gem fest by accident. partly glowing streaks of red green and blue, ricochet around the open air and scuff any surface that gets in their way, causing a slice like beat pattern to envelop itself and silently explode, releasing the most intense lightshow the world has ever seen. cool stuff. 'polestar - 8b12 (boc scadet remix)' takes it easy with a minimal stroll through a barren landscape, scatted with the piles of unused light bulbs and exhaust fumes from overhead rocket ships, which has formed itself into huge organic pyramids on the dusty floor below, whilst 'cheju - sliding window (line noise remix)' drags you along on a brand new missions which is has just been informed about, with a huge smile on its triangular face. rich with tangy zips and remote controlled zaps, tied together with washing samples from the unseen en underground reservoir on saturn’s satellite moon, this one programs you into a robot mania, and you love it. the second disc is packed full of remixes made by winners of a competition held by boltfish. the competition was to create a remix of 'camellia' a vocal track (vocals courtesy of soo lee) originally made by cheju and included on the compilation 'region zero' reviewed here. thirteen were chosen in the end to make it on the cd and they are from the rumblist, kado, z-arc, richard houghten, sunburn in cyprus, damien shingleton, tito huapaya, mattew mccullough, manilla, ray benge, tarafonika, sidechain and cheju. personal favourites are 'z-arc - retro hyperbox edit' for its neon crunch information leak, 'tito huapaya's - hp mix' for a huge sweeping flyby of a city in meltdown after the hottest summer on record and 'cheju - ice mix' for a full on fuzz up, laced with electronic ribbons. take a listen to em all. patchwork is another rich, intelligent and soothing welcome to my battery core. boltfish continue to develop and blossom in all areas, and are fast becoming a label with a killer selection of artists, and releases. plus i don’t think i need to say again, that all this music is available from their site or for purchase on nice neat cd packages. just do it!" - tesselate, 12.05 |
